It is no longer enough for an architect or an interior designer to churn out designs with no regard for sustainability. We take our responsibilities very seriously in this, and Mount Eliza presents both challenges and solutions. The coastal location and the climate mean issues such as heating and ventilation are different from how they are in enclosed urban areas. It is incumbent on us to make sure the occupants of the housing units we design are comfortable all year round, so the budget for a design must cater for how things are going to be in all seasons. But if we can use the location to make the most of the breeze and the sun, then we are designing in tandem with nature rather than against it. Solar power is the obvious part of this, but there is also the matter of which way the building faces and how much shelter – if any – it receives from the landscape and neighbouring properties as regards wind and rain. The added bonus of this kind of eye for architecture sustainability is that if it’s done well, it results in lower utility bills. You can collect rainwater, for instance.
