A high-precision ancillary intervention, reconciling industrial heritage with the demands of a contemporary work-from-home lifestyle.

The Constraint

The project involved a heritage site in Coburg where the primary residence required a secondary, independent volume to support professional work-from-home requirements. The challenge was to create a significant architectural addition that felt modern and expressive without overshadowing the original home. We needed to navigate strict backyard setbacks while delivering a studio that felt airy, productive, and visually distinct from the traditional domestic environment.

Instead of recessive tones, we utilized warm timber-look cladding punctuated by cyan-hued geometric panels to create a playful yet professional aesthetic. The cantilevered upper floor maximizes the internal loft volume while preserving the garden footprint below. By prioritizing large-format glazing and a high-contrast material palette, we delivered an ancillary structure that acts as a landmark within the site—providing a clear psychological and aesthetic boundary between the home and the professional studio. If you’re looking for innovative small house architecture solutions, we specialise in designing homes that maximise functionality and style, even on compact or heritage sites.

1
CONTEXTUAL HERITAGE

Spec: Strategic positioning of the ancillary volume to maximize the existing backyard footprint while adhering to rigorous side-boundary setbacks.

Outcome: Secured a high-yield, professional workspace that maintains the privacy and garden amenity of the primary heritage residence.

2
LIGHT & VOLUMETRIC REPAIR

Spec: Implementation of a “Chromatic Composition” palette—utilizing warm timber-composite cladding punctuated by vibrant cyan geometric accents.

Outcome: Implementation of a “Chromatic Composition” palette—utilizing warm timber-composite cladding punctuated by vibrant cyan geometric accents.

3
LIFE-CYCLE ASSESSMENT

Spec: Selection of low-maintenance, high-durability exterior finishes and a high-performance thermal envelope for year-round climate control.

Outcome: Ensured the long-term operational resilience and multi-generational versatility of the asset as a studio, retreat, or future guest suite.
